Gratitude is Good for Your Health

Finally, some research reports coming in on the power of Saying Thank You. This is from today's pages of USA Today.

Stepping up the gratitude
Giving thanks year-round can make you healthier

Your Health By Kim Painter

Thursday, in between the cheese ball appetizers and the pumpkin pie desserts, most of us will indulge in something proven to have powerful health benefits.

No, it's not that extra serving of stuffing. It's the expression of gratitude — the simple act of thanking God, thanking others or just counting your blessings. Saying thanks, it turns out, isn't just pious or polite. It's good for you.

But there's a catch: You have to do it even when the calendar does not say "Thanksgiving."

"It doesn't really work if you do it only once a year," says Sonja Lyubomirsky, professor of psychology at the University of California-Riverside.

Practicing gratitude is like exercising, says Robert Emmons, professor of psychology at the University of California-Davis: Use it, and you won't lose it, even when times are tough, as they are for many folks right now.

Lyubomirsky and Emmons are among researchers who have studied the power of gratitude and learned, for example, that:

•People with high blood pressure not only lower their blood pressure, but they feel less hostile and are more likely to quit smoking and lose weight when they practice gratitude. This was demonstrated by calling a research hotline once a week to report on the things that make them grateful.

•People who care for relatives with Alzheimer's disease feel less stress and depression when they keep daily gratitude journals, listing the positive things in their lives.

•Those who maintain a thankful attitude through life appear to have lower risks of several disorders, including depression, phobias, bulimia and alcoholism.

•Most people can lift their mood simply by writing a letter of thanks to someone. Hand-deliver the letter, and the boost in happiness can last weeks or months.

Practicing gratitude in these systematic ways changes people by changing brains that "are wired for negativity, for noticing gaps and omissions," Emmons says. "When you express a feeling, you amplify it. When you express anger, you get angrier; when you express gratitude, you become more grateful."

And grateful people, he says, don't focus so much on pain and problems. They also are quicker to realize they have friends, families and communities to assist them in times of need. They see how they can help others in distress as well, he says.

After 9/11, many people reported increased feelings of gratitude, says Chris Peterson, a professor of psychology at the University of Michigan.

It's too soon for studies on the influence of the nation's financial meltdown, but Peterson says he hears a lot of people counting their blessing these days. "There are people who say 'It could be worse, and I'm glad I have my health.' "

Gratitude won't get those people new jobs or replenish their retirement accounts, but it could give them the energy to tackle their challenges, Peterson says:

"It can only help."

What a wonderful reminder of the truth.

Last night I was grumpy, kinda pissed as I climbed into bed. I was irritated by things beyond my control. But before I started grinding my teeth to sleep, I journaled, a long, scrawling entry of ramblings ... of thanksgiving.

I wrote how thankful I was for leaves and gloves and the smell of fall, like root beer and dirt and damp. I thought of the blisters on my hands from raking and breathed deeply, thankful for having earned them, along with chapped cheeks. I wrote of my thankfulness for portable music, including, specifically "Collapsible Plans" and "Live High" -- both which made my yard work enjoyable. And I wrote of my gratitude for my boys, and their unadulterated joy of rolling around in the leaves.

I went to sleep happy, and slept soundly.

I pray you have a happy Thanksgiving. Wish I could make it to Richmond, but I'll be busy spending time with my family instead. :)

Peace,
Julie

I would love to hand deliver a letter of gratitude to you. However, I'm pretty sure that's not going to happen, so I'll just thank you here.

Dearest Jason-
Thank you for a fantastic show in Chicago. You did a wonderful job. As a result of your talent and willingness to share your night with so many, you helped me have a wonderful time!
I got to pretend not to be a mom and a wife for a couple of hours, and replenish my feelings of youth (at my old age of 30). It was much needed. A big thanks for that!
Also, thanks for laughing at our sign. It made our night.
Love ya-
Anne

Wouldn't it be wonderful if all of the comments on this post about gratitude featured what everyone is grateful for? As for me, I am grateful for the unconditional love of my friends, my family, and my God. I am grateful for having what I need to get by comfortably and even though I am unemployed right now, I have thankful for the opportunity and the tenacity to keep trying to find something. I am grateful for people with talent that I do not have for sharing those talents with others - artists, musicians, and other people that create things that I can love and enjoy, as if it were my own. I am grateful for peace and hope and CHANGE.

I hope everyone has a wonderful week. Thank you for the opportunity to share the gratitude. :)

Following Melissa's advice:

I have thankful for my mother and enchiladas, for brothers who tease and a dog who's out of this world. For the love of others and the love of myself. For not having anything to grade this weekend and for the end of the semester -- which means a new one is just about to begin.

And thanks for sharing the article, Jason. As I don't get a paper to read.

I am thankful for the love I feel in my family... between parents/children, siblings, in-laws... that has been magnified beyond belief in recent months as we deal with a challenging situation. I am thankful for having shoulders to lean on and to cry on - and also for being that strong shoulder for others when they need it. I am thankful that I have people who love me unconditionally... even when (read: especially when) I don't make it easy.

I'm also thankful that you pointed out this USA Today article to all of us. It's something that my dad desperately needs to hear as he deals with some painful memories and painful circumstances of the present.

Thanks also for the amazing show last night. I was there with my best friend -- not the "If It Kills Me" type of best friend, but my soul mate nonetheless. Thanks, and safe travels as you finish up the tour! :)

Thank you...
I was fraud about two weeks ago. I lost all my life savings and my secure life as that's all money that i got. But, I am feeling much better now by feeling grateful that i am still alive and quite healthy. I believe it's not the end of everything. There's too much stuff to do. Life is too short to live it with scheisse all the time. So i'd rather live it happily and gratefully.
I still have my senses and am thankful for that. I can listen to music, make my own music, sing out loud, and also have my friends around me. That's more than enough.
Thank you for reminding us how to be grateful for every brand new day where we can breathe and live.
Too many things to thank for...
Thank you again, JAson! <3

With love and gratitude,
Mita xxx

I'm glad you posted this...I wholeheartedly belive attitude is everything. It can make or break a day...and other people's continual bad attitude can wreak havoc on other people's inner peace (ask me how I know *wink*)
Thank YOU for being a constant source to remind us all how important it is to be grateful, and to smile, and be silly, and ENJOY IT.
I am ever grateful for my incredible family, my husband, who is an AWESOME Dad to his daughters...that I can live with more than a few comforts...I am grateful for each day that I wake up and I can see the morning sun, and smell the fresh air of a new day, that I can hear my girls giggle when I make a funny face, and that I can taste that AWESOME first cup of coffee in the morning *smile*

Happy Thanksgiving - safe travels - much love -

I'm grateful for ferris wheels and kisses in the rain. Eight year old nephews who insist on drawing on my palm and leaving a message of love. Having my own rest area. A dad with a million dollar smile, a step-dad with a heart of gold. A mom with a wicked sense of humor and a fish named Fisch. Kansas blue skies and orange sunsets. Blank canvases, clean brushes and tubes full of paint.

And, of course, your music. I've lost count of how many times it has brought me out of my own muck and mire.

So thank you, Jason, for reminding me to just take it easy.

"Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion's starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don't see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often it's not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it's always there - fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge - they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I've got a sneaky feeling you'll find that love actually is all around."

I just had the urge to quote this beautiful statement from a beautiful movie. It's "Love actually" and it's, actually, one of the greatest christmas movies ever.

On my way to work this morning I was thinking about the little Thanksgiving speech you made last night in St. Louis. You helped remind me how it is important to give thanks all time, and that being grateful is contagious. Being rich with gratitude is the best kind of wealth. So Jason, thank you for reminding me of that. (And I am sure you are now thankful that this USA Today article helps validate your point!)

Being grateful for everything is so highly underrated! Practicing this everyday becomes infectious and suddenly smiles and laughter start popping up in the most seemingly unusual places like the kids section of a retail store, on a Saturday afternoon, during a sale, before the holidays (yes this happened last weekend -- there was a vibe going, when people bumped each other they giggled instead of grumbled, it was so awesome I was even happier when I left the store!)

Ok, so it was silly of your fans to worry about your health so early in the tour. (Girls!) From the looks of it, you were just getting wound up.

So here's a different kind of wish: that you find home within you wherever your travels may take you; that you continue to feel more drawn to the fulcrum than by the fringes; that you are able to shut your head off when the rest of your body needs the break; and that the ocean is never more than a long, blink of the eyes away.

Happy Thanksgiving everybody!

PS--Oh yes, and don't be messin' with Toca's little cymbals. I won't be watching (I'm going to a land with no Internet... my house in San Antonio. You thought I was going to a place on the outskirts of civilization, like Timbuktu, didn't you?), but I'll still know...

J thought it would be funny to write Mraz in the subject line of an email he sent me after your concert, so the "from" line read "Jason Mraz." He loved the concert, as people do. Your songs make people happy; the poignant ones remind us of our humanity. He also said he cried when you sang "Song for a friend," but he cries a lot, and quoted the lyrics of your song in the email...

My brother got married Saturday and guess what song was playing when the bride and groom marched into the reception hall. "I'm Yours." And guess what song was playing during the couples' dance (the one where the last couple on the dance floor is the one that's been married the longest). "Lucky." Imagine that!

I listened to the Live CD on the drive and found it sweetly frustrating. I can't sing or whistle or loodle loodle well enough or fast enough to keep up. It reminded me of when I listen to classical music; it's not easy to express my appreciation for what I hear by copying it in some way. I also realized that the sounds your instruments sing are just as satisfying as the sounds that mean something.

This song "Warming Up" is so sweet and beautiful. bellaluna57 put out a video from feb 2006 from a Lestat's performance that is just so perfect. Funny thing, a little less than two years ago, Jason is visibly and admitedly nervous. His hair is down, as opposed the shabba UP-Do of today and he looks so young and innocent and vulnerable. This is such a beautiful song, I hope it makes it's way to an album someday. My husband is opening up to the idea of Jason in the bedroom, and so we are building a wonderful playlist called "Jason to mac to". "Warming Up" would make a great intro!

Big love for the tour and the love you gave us along the way. See ya when we see ya--I.e. go dissappear with T.B. for a while will ya!

Hi. Just wanted to thank you for such an uplifting and just plain FUN concert at THE NATIONAL in Richmond. We were "lucky" enough to see you both nights(my teenage daughter and I). It has really been a very difficult past couple of years, months, days. If your songs are autobiographical, then you probably understand. Just had my 2nd 39th bday and I'm trying to remember what it was like to have FUN. So THANK YOU for giving my daughter and I some bright sunny spots amidst the dark clouds I am hoping will hurry up and pass. You really connect with your audience...can you read my mind? If you ever have the slightest inking to meet some of your hometown admirers(I worked in Mechanicsville back in the early to mid 90's), then please send a wink, nod, or smile.(Believe me, we are not crazed fans; just admirers of your music and philosophy and would treasure the opportunity to meet you.)

mr. mraz, this is truly a beautiful post. (although most of your posts are...)
due to recent events in my life, i've been feeling pretty sorry for myself. reading the words you have posted here is a welcome breath of fresh air. sometimes you just need to be reminded that everything is okay - that so many others have it worse - that i need to remember to be aware of all that i DO have, as opposed to focusing on what i don't. slowing down long enough to thank God & the universe for blessing me.
it's so easy to lose faith in human beings in this day to day life - but i feel hopeful when i read your posts or listen to the music you create.

now, for what i'm personally grateful for ---
being alive, my voice, my best friend & love of my life, my parents, my kitty, for people who put up with me and continue to love me even when i am making a mess of things, the roof over my head, being able to take deep, fresh breaths everyday, self awareness, peppermint hot chocolate, laughter, my 5 year old niece who i feel like i can learn so much from.....
also, reading the comments here and remembering that despite how heavy things can feel - we are all in this together.

thank you!

I came across this last night as i was reading and it jumped off the page and I instantly went to you...

"I'm not here to ask for anything today. I'm taking the day off, and I've come home. A man goes away from his home and it is in him to do it. He lies in strange beds in the dark, and the wind is different in the trees. He walks in the street and there are the faces in front of his eyes, but there are no names for the faces. The voices he hears are not the voices he carried away in his ears a long time back when he went away. The voices he hears are loud. They are so loud he does not hear for a long time at a stretch those voices he carried away in his ears. But there comes a minute when it is quiet and he can hear those voices he carried away in his ears a long time back. He can make out what they say and they say: Come back. They say: Come back, boy. So he comes back."

-All the King's Men

Congrats on a successful tour you are almost done...for a couple months anyway. Congrats on all you have accomplished...you are almost home.

A woman's prerogative...

Can you ask for more meaningful recognition of your work than the thundrous applause you received after you played the last note of "Happy Endings" in Seattle?

You know that our sense of fulfillment comes after we've worked hard on something we care about and can feel satisfied with the outcome. Any accolades that come later are beside the point.

Still...

Ugh. I was supposed to go to Clearwater tonight, but due to about ten million signs and road blocks in my way saying that I should not go, I have finally given in and admitted defeat. it was just wasn't meant to be tonight :(

Play well tonight. Enjoy yourself. Only a couple of days left and you can rest. ahhhhhhhhh....
