Mmmmusic

I am grateful to have music in my life. My mom was the first person to turn me on to it. She sat me at the piano, shaped my fingers to help me make sense of chords, and we would play chopsticks over and over again. My step-dad, an incredible drummer, gave me a drum kit for my 10th birthday. That gift taught me the essential rock/rap beat, a cross-stick over the hi-hat and snare while the foot slams the kick on the 1 and 3. Even if I never pursued music as a career, those few musical moments introduced me to an organized and expressive way of being that would carry over into friendships and academics, improving my attitude and overall performance at school.

I am so grateful for the many, many amazing music teachers in the public schools who kept me enrolled in the power of self-expression and group participation. I am thankful for that extraordinary study of sound and the opportunity to play when the age was most appropriate for playing.

Please support arts programs in your community, especially in the schools. At the very least, it’ll give the graffiti on the overpass some depth.

I am also thankful to Rick Alvey and everyone at Mechanicsville Music for being such a generous supplier of instruments and instruction for the Richmond and Hanover County communities in Virginia. Here's a pic of Me & Rick.

I am thankful for the music of Bushwalla, and Eric Hutchinson. I am grateful for John Gonzalez, a keyboard wizard, who turned me onto the music of G. Love & Special Sauce way back in 1994. I am grateful to G. Love and his Philadelphia Special Sauce for simmering for so long and still tastin’ oh so good.

I am grateful for K’naan for sharing his life experiences, joy and wisdom with us thru his powerful music.

I look forward to seeing all of the above at the upcoming Gratitude Café Tour, kicking off in 2 weeks! All Aboard. This circus is coming to town.

I'm greatful my parents let me be who I am, even though I was always the weird girl who sat in the corner and drew or spaced out a lot.
They never tried to change who I was.

And of the many things I'm greatful for, it's them.

Awesome post :)

I'm grateful that music exists. I'm grateful for my family: it's not perfect but we love each other a lot. I'm grateful for my friends, the ones that I have and the ones that I had and do not walk by my side anymore, all of them made and make me who I am. I'm grateful that I get to study hard so I can be what I want and help mankind with my knowledge. I'm grateful that my father is a jazz trompet player and composer, without it I would never know how to make music. I'm grateful for making love, could God have come up with anything better? I don't think so.

I'm grateful for these posts! :) They always inspire and always turn any gray, bleak day into one that's full of light, even if the sun's hiding.

I'm inspired by your post .. I really owe all of my musical happiness and talent to my first band teacher from elementary school who, in his quiet kindness and subtle love of all things melodic, transformed a small Asian girl into someone who'd be forever in love with every type of music. I should look him up and get in touch with him. Thank him for all that he's done.

Thank you, again, for the wonderful things you contribute to this world - we need more of you and people like you!

I am grateful that Minnesota voters had the foresight to increase their sales tax (for once)and dedicate a chunk to the arts and the environment!!
So if you must shop...come shopping in Minnesota and support our extensive array of regional theaters, museums and music venues. (One of my favorites - http://www.jonhasslertheater.org/ )Better yet, attend a performance and support the programs simultaneously!
Nothing like double-dipping!!

Life is but a stage..or a series there of.

i am grateful for life. last night was the scariest. i had to get an ekg and stuff done because my heart was going nuts. apparently it was said to be from stress and anxiety. they told me to try to de-stress myself. i'm not sure how to do that. usually music helps that. but we'll see. it was a freak me out night. anyhow....

i'm sure one day i can take lessons in positivity. bc right now it's at about 80%, so theres room to improve ;~)

take care and see you soon...

So true. If schools teach children only how to read, write, and do math, then there will be nothing new for them to write or read about, and no motivation or creative impulse to solve problems.

I am grateful for music, visual art, poetry, dance, and every avenue that leads to greater self-knowledge and self-expression.

And I am grateful for the beautiful, delicate volunteer wildflower that started growing in our outdoor flowerpot just recently, after the seeds we intentionally planted there did not come up.

Peace Out

Jason,

I'm grateful to be heading to Michigan tomorrow to help a friend.

I'm sorry, but Eric Hutchinson sounds like a Jason Mraz wannabe, and I'll take My Mraz with a Z thankyou. There is a difference between inspiration and stylistic plagierism.

Still, thankyou for sharing. I'm grateful and I'm sure they are as well.

My son will be starting a musical instrument this year and I know we will be fighting him for a while until he can see a cool factor or some personal benefit to himself. The hardest part for him is going to be picking an instrument. We tried to steer him toward drums, but I think he is more inclined toward the flute. They started the baroque flute this past school year and he took to it. He likes beat box and will certainly try and incorporate it into any instrument he plays. WE just want him to experience the joy of music and creativity through music. So much so that we have picked up guitars this year (my hubby and I) and are learning to play in order to foster an aura of musicianship in our home.
Thankyou for sharing the importance of music. It is healing to the entire body in so many ways.

Agape,
Millie

Grateful for so much, but today I'm feeling gratitude for the music teachers and arts instructors in my community also. When my nine year old opened her mouth to sing, and sounds from heaven poured out, I knew nothing about helping her use that gift. She has so much support from her instructors now, and will always have the gift of music to help her express her identity.

Also grateful for your posts and your music, which often help keep me in the right frame of mind :)

I'm thankful for my father holding onto his passions and patiently waiting for me to seek them out, never knowing if I'd ever come his way.

At 25 I sat on the floor of his study sifting through his teenage years, and he relived those days. A 16 year old boy stood there beside me, disguised as a distinguished, weathered man, as he proudly told me, "This was my first record," or, "you were a nobody if you didn't have this one," and even a secret or two of "I had to hide this one from my Mom."

I eagerly drove 3 hours home, putting the records on my newest craigslist purchase, and sat on the hardwood floors. Instantly I understood my fathers pride. I enjoyed the simplicity of that moment.

What about 'Hot Cross Buns' on the recorder in second grade? Or 'Ode to Joy' on the violin/viola/cello in 'strings' during fourth?
I can still play the simple 2/4 beat (sticks crossed, of course) on the drums (did you ever try for double bass on the 3?) that my uncle taught me at 13, and the song ('Doe, a deer' from Mary Poppins) that my Mom taught me on the piano at five... Does that mean I'll be as accomplished as you one day? ;)

I'm grateful for hats and smiles and bowling (oh my!).
And for kitten noses, and piano keyboards, and your music ('Did You Get My Message' is on itunes right now), and Ghetto Blasters!

J, these 2 last post really turned out a good exercise to our souls!!

It's wonderful to remember that we have actually a lot of things to be grateful for... some of them are really little day-to-day stuff.

birds twittering in my backyard every morning...
the way my iphone awakes me -> at the sound of YOU;))
people paying attention to what we say...
a mail, sms or tweet remembering that someone is thinking about us... that we are special 2 someone;)
meals, baths, beds, water...
the SUN...
sunflowers...
smiles...
HUGs...
looking at the mirror and feeling really pretty...
seeing our smile rising in others lips... and understanding that we are beautiful despite of the mirror (they're both good feelings)...
music...
friend's voices...
...

"Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes";)
"Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes" :)))))
It's all about being able to feel that, isn't it? ;)

it's 23hrs here... gonna work a little bit... I'm preparing the contingency plan to deal with H1N1 threat in September, at the beginning of the school year...

I'll be grateful 2.. very much... if this virus won't get to do the damage we're expecting...

good night...

I am grateful that I was encouraged from a young age to keep journals because it allowed my proficiency with the written word to come through my fingers and onto the page. I am also super grateful that simultaneously I was encouraged to read as much as possible, get outside to play and always find ways to express through words. Not to mention everything else that has ever happened to me to shape me into the person I am today, no matter what it was. I am grateful that I am a person who lives with zero regret.

It is also very cool that I was able to snag front row first section stage left (house right) for DMB in Hershey, PA just 15 days from now. I'll be cheering you on there as well of course. Also I can not wait to see all of the amazing artists you're taking with you on your own crazy summer ride when my Mom and I take in your Gratitude carnival in Boston on August 4.

I also love that since my network was set up today I can make these little sweet symbols again -- ♥

Hey Jason.
My name isn't "Jooonny" my name's Jenny and I'm a girl.
I know, you don't know me but I have to tell you something.
I know that you read "The Alchimist" of Paulo Coelho. It confuses me, because I dreamed 3 times from the same person.
This person was you. I don't know why, I only dreamed of you and I have to say that my last dream's 2 years ago.
In the first dream it was my birthday and you came in Germany in my school. You came to me and congratulated me on my birthday, then you gave me a letter. Your sister(I don't know if you got one) sang a birthday song for me. Then I awake the first time.
I drank water and then I sleeped again.
Then it was my birthday but we celebrated in the house from a friend of me. You brought some friends with you, Bushwalla Makepeacebrothers and K'naan. Then you answered that on the concert were some guys from a record label called something with "Universal". K'naan said to you that it doesn't matter and you said:"I have to take time for the concert" and I said something like:"But not too much time".
Then my brother woke me up and I said to him, he shall go away.

I am grateful for you, absolutely. My friends and I think often how different and sad our lives would be if you weren't apart of them. So glad you are. Makes it so much more wonderful. So thanks for being you :) Have fun on tour!

I'm grateful for having truly loved a particularly spectacular Jason.

I'm grateful that he introduced me to your music as he wrapped it around me in a loving embrace.

I'm grateful that, even while I can no longer be embraced by HIM, that the embrace lives on for me, in the music you provided as a background for our romance.

Through your music, I'm able to continue to believe in love, even when it's not allowed.

Thank you.
Namaste -- I honor the place where the universal flow works in mysterious ways.

Music is a common thread that binds all people I truly believe. Music transcends negativity and promotes connectivity in a way no other medium can.
I am grateful ...
that music can heal and teach and touch and that to this day I still feel that way.
for the FEEL of music- the way it flows in and through and out of you and moves you (and makes YOU move!)
for my son and that he inherited that love with me from the extremely ecclectic and talented family we are blessed with.
for wisdom born from trial
for cool mountain streams and long walks on warm days
for cool nights and open windows
AND experience...

I am constantly thinking about music, and how it has shaped and inspired me because of my career goals – being a music student, I am a sponge to everything around me!
For me, it was my high school choir director who inspired me to sing and be as musical as possible. Music brings enjoyment, as well as being an outlet for those tough high school years, and I want to create my own safe environment for others to experience music and express themselves.
I think it's super to have this opportunity to comment on your thoughts; speaking with other people who have creative musical minds and hearts really affirms that I am on the right path.
Sooo very excited to fly out to Toronto for your show in August! I’ll be the speck in the back of the amphitheatre!
I am grateful to have dreams, and to wish that we could somehow talk about music after your show that night, that is, if you don’t need a nap 
ps. I luv harmonizing with your voice
